Public Policy Recommendations
In February 2007, the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) released a set of principles to help guide its engagement in the widening public debate over U.S. policy to address climate change.
In January 2009, EEI adopted an updated climate change framework calling for an 80-percent reduction of carbon emissions by 2050, from current levels. The updated framework builds upon the 2007 principles and reaffirms EEI's commitment to support the concept of mandatory federal legislation capping carbon emissions.
Going forward, EEI supports federal legislation to reduce GHG emissions that:
- Ensures the development and cost-effective deployment of a full suite of “climate-friendly” technologies and measures, and helps provide for their funding;
- Minimizes economic disruption to customers and avoids harm to the competitiveness of U.S. industry; and
- Ensures an economy-wide approach to GHG reductions.
